Although we usually associate director Sam Mendes with the likes of 'American Beauty' or his work on 'Spectre' or 'Skyfall', he's also tried his hand at war movies like 'Jarhead'.

'1917' takes place in World War I and sets itself up as a straightforward, no-nonsense thriller wherein two soldiers - George Mackay and 'Game of Thrones' alum Dean-Charles Chapman - have to race against time to stop a battalion from launching an attack that will fail if they don't reach them in time. The two soldiers have to make their way across the battlefields to stop the advance, or the entire battalion will be slaughtered.

The cast includes the likes of Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and Richard Madden, but it's George Mackay and Dean-Charles Chapman who make up the central characters. Going by the trailer alone, it definitely does look like it's matching Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk' for the tension and the action, and the stripped-back story means it can focus in on that.

'1917' arrives in Irish cinemas on January 10th, 2020.
