'Aquaman 2' now has a screenwriter, which means it has officially entered development.

David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the first 'Aquaman', is set to write 'Aquaman 2'. Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote the first 'Aquaman' with Will Beall based on a story by Geoff Johns, Beall, and director James Wan.

The screenwriter previously wrote 'The Conjuring 2' and 'The Conjuring 3' for Wan. Other credits include 'Orphan' and 'The Walking Dead', with future projects including 'Dungeons & Dragons' and a remake of 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'.

It is early days, so there's not much to go on with where the sequel's story will go. However, given the ending of the Jason Momoa-led movie, we will likely be seeing more of Black Manta at the very least.

Wan is best-known for producing 'The Conjuring' universe. Because of his commitments to its various installments, it's possible that he won't return to helm the 'Aquaman' follow-up. However, nothing has been confirmed either way.

Wan is currently in negotiations to produce the 'Aquaman' sequel alongside Peter Safran.

The superhero movie earned over $1.1 billion worldwide and has surpassed DC/Warner Bros' 'The Dark Knight' as the studios' highest grossing film ever.

A spinoff horror about the Trench is also in the works from Wan. The Trench are the amphibian specifies that attacked Mera (Amber Heard) and Arthur (Momoa) on their boat in 'Aquaman'.

Both Heard and Momoa are expected to return for 'Aquaman 2'.
