It was looking precarious for a while there, but 'Dune' will officially be getting a sequel.

Thus far, 'Dune' has made $223.2 million in the worldwide box office against a whopping $165 million budget.

The movie has been rolling out in cinemas across the globe since September.

In the US, it was also released on streaming service HBO Max.

Denis Villeneuve, the director, producer and co-screenwriter of 'Dune', will return for its follow-up.

The news of the sequel was confirmed on the social media accounts of Legendary and Warner Bros.

Villeneuve said in a statement: "I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with 'Dune: Part Two'.

"It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert's 'Dune', and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning."

There is no official word on the cast yet.

However, it's expected that Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya will both return as the protagonists Paul Atreides and Chani.

Also likely returning are Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Stellan Skarsgard as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
