Shelley, who had no prior acting experience, was discovered at a party she was hosting for her artist boyfriend and immediately cast in Robert Altman's Brewster McCloud. She began her career in several more Altman films and was awarded Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival in 1977 for her performance in 3 Women. Shelley was not only an award-winning actress but an Emmy-nominated producer and pioneer of cable television, responsible for Faerie Tale Theatre, Bedtime Stories and other kid-friendly programming. After appearing in a large slate of movies and shows in the 1990s, Shelley left Hollywood and retired from film in 2002. She now lives alongside her boyfriend Dan Gilroy and away from the spotlight on a ranch in Texas Hill Country.
