The evenings are gradually getting darker and while this can mean cosier evenings in front of the fire shutting out the world, it can also unfortunately lead to an increase in crime.

The Gardai have issued a seasonal warning that there will be a rise in burglaries over the winter months. Sergeant Kelvin Courtney from the National Crime Prevention Unit said in a statement; "Burglaries can happen at any time, on any day. However it is important to note that the number of residential burglaries that occur between the hours of 5pm and 10pm, fluctuate throughout the year; depending on the levels of darkness."

Their biggest tip? Leave the lights on during these hours. Obviously that's not always ideal, so they also encourage people to use timers on lights so it looks like somebody is at home.

While if you are away for a few days you should ask your neighbours to open and close your curtains periodically, remove any build up of post, and in general, don't leave car or house keys in visible areas.

Chrisht. Good advice and all, but you'd nearly feel like we should all just get safe rooms now too.
