Speaking with The New York Times about her appearance in the revival series, the 46-year-old actor said that they were proud of the character that was created.

If you've been keeping up with 'And Just Like That...', you'll no doubt be familiar with Che Diaz, who eventually becomes Miranda's new love interest.

Introducing new characters into an already well-established franchise can be tricky, but Sara Ramirez had the difficult task of taking on the role of someone who influences and changes the very fibre of another beloved character from the original 'Sex and the City' TV series.

When we first meet Che, who is a comedian and LGBTQ+ activist, they are the lead host on Carrie's podcast which discusses relationships and sex. However, once Che and Miranda cross paths at Big's funeral, this awkward interaction sees their relationship begin to bloom, eventually leading to Miranda leaving her husband Steve of 21 years.

Che, who was unapologetically woke during the season, received a lot of backlash from viewers online which hasn't gone unnoticed by Ramirez. They said: "I’m very aware of the hate that exists online but I have to protect my own mental health and my own artistry.

"And that’s way more important to me because I’m a real human being. I’m really proud of the representation that we’ve created. We have built a character who is a human being, who is imperfect, who’s complex, who is not here to be liked, who’s not here for anybody’s approval. They’re here to be themselves."

Ramirez also stressed that they were "not in control of the writing" but the character is a real reflection of what happens in life: "There are a lot of different human beings who show up to the table, speaking truth to power in myriad ways and they all land differently with different people.

"Che Diaz has their own audience that they speak to who really get a kick out of what they’re doing."

Ramirez concluded the topic by saying that the character is "a little reminder that no one’s perfect".

The ten-episode season of 'And Just Like That...' concluded last week. Although a second season has yet to be officially confirmed by HBO Max, Sara Jessica Parker admitted to wanting to return as Carrie Bradshaw once again.

All ten episodes of 'And Just Like That...' are available via Sky TV or streaming service NOW.
