Move aside Helen Mirren's 'Catherine the Great'. There's a new take on the Russian Empress coming to the small screen with Elle Fanning taking on the icon.

The series is titled 'The Great' and co-stars Nicholas Hoult in the role of Peter III of Russia.

Anyone who has seen 'The Favourite', starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman, will definitely recognise the satirical, playful tone. And what do you know? It's by the same writer, Tony McNamara.

According to official synopses, it is "about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia's history".

It is being described as a "satirical comedic drama" that also  details "her explosive relationship with husband Peter". It uses "only occasional historical facts."

Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow also star.

The show premieres on Hulu on May 15th but we're looking into where you can stream the show on these shores.
